The Fish Aquarium

Develop a regular care routine for your aquarium. Most people overestimate the amount of work that is required to maintain an aquarium. As a matter of fact, aquaria that are fussed over too much often fail to thrive! Allowing the aquarium to just be, doing only the things that are necessary, is usually the best idea for the plants to grow and the fish to maintain a good color. In other words, don't go overboard testing water pH, fertilizing, diffusing carbon dioxide, and things like these.

If your fish seem to be having a problem, test the water first to find out if something is wrong; but, don't overdo it unless there seems to be a tank or fish problem! The danger is less when it is ignored rather than when it is fussed over. Don't completely ignore the tank either. The most beneficial thing you can do to your aquarium is to simply sit in front of it and observe it, become familiar with the fish, how they should look, the kinds of plants you have, and how they should be growing.

This part of our hobby isn't work, but it can be a very relaxing and important part of maintaining your tank. It is the time to feed them and observe their behavior. Getting to know each of your fish will allow you to intervene if something arises or if their behavior or appearance changes. Don't let anything interfere with the 10 or 15 minutes you spend each day in front of your aquarium! Sit quietly and enjoy it; that is, after all why you have it! Decide when you want to spend this time. Is it in the early morning, afternoon, or late in the evening when everyone is in bed? Are your plants growing and filling the tank the way you pictured them? Do your fish like to hide, and do you have a place to do that?

These are some of the things you will learn from watching and relaxing in front of your created aquarium. Setting Up a Specialized Aquarium There are dozens of specialized fish species that are quite fascinating; but, not all are suitable for community aquariums. If you want these types of fish, you will need to create a separate specialized aquarium.

Many fish can be found and caught in the wild and observed for a while; however, they should be released back into the water as close to where they were captured. Two of these are the three and nine spined stickleback. Both types are frequently found in brackish water and their spines make them unattractive as food for other fish. While they may be found in the same water, in their natural habitat they are competitors and should not be kept in the same aquarium for any reason.

The three-spined stickleback is usually found in wide ditches or flowing waters. The male species are quite beautiful and colored. Their bellies are bright red and the eyes shine green-blue in the sunlight. Only one male and two or three females can be placed in an aquarium as the dominant male will constantly attack the other males. The fish should be about equal size and ready to spawn. DO NOT choose the largest fish for an aquarium as they are at the height of their sexual maturity when they are medium size! Sticklebacks frequently die after they have reached the end of their reproduction period. Only a few females have lived to be three years of age and males never live that long.

Their tank should be kept in a cool area of your home and the lighting should represent a long day as they will not spawn during shorter winter days. With 16 or more hours of light, they should spawn during all seasons, even fall and winter. The aquarium should be densely planted and have caves for the females to hide in with a strip of sand in the front for the male to use to build his nest. They require a great deal of live or frozen food. Dry artificial food is not acceptable.

The male will care for the brood after they hatch; however, the entire family should be returned to the natural place of capture before the male begins to mistake his young offspring as food. Snails Aren't Slow Whether intentionally or accidentally introduced, every aquarium will eventually have snails. They are usually accidently brought in on plants or live food. Snails propagate very quickly and can easily become a nuisance to the aquarist.

While some snails are welcome, others should be eliminated as much and quickly as possible. This can be done with snail eating fish like the puffer. However, puffers can cause problems with other fish when they attack and nibble on other fish's fins. Collecting snails is usually sufficient and can be achieved by baiting them with a piece of carrot or potato placed in the tank. After a short period of time the vegetable will collect a large number of snails and can be simply removed from the aquarium.

There are three common types of aquarium snails:

* The Lymnaea Stagnalis is the most common of the aquarium snails and is the only one that will destroy plants. These snails are also found in outdoor ponds and can be recognized by their single color and large pointed shells. They can easily be mistaken for the Viviparous Viviparous, which has a brown banded shell and can close off the opening of the shell. Both of these are interesting for ponds but really are not recommended for home aquariums.

* The Malayan Snail has a pointed shell that is tapered and more slender that the Lymnaea. It grows only slightly larger than 1 cm. They are useful as scavengers and during the day live on the substrate. They are also helpful as aerators by keeping the soil loose without damaging the plant life. While they multiply easily, they are not a danger to the aquarium.

*The Ramshorn is a reddish or blackish flat, circular snail and among the most common found in aquariums. While some believe them to be useful in cleaning the tank, others disagree with this conclusion. They are only a danger to the plants when there is an infestation. It is your responsibility to thin the snails just as it is necessary to thin the plants; otherwise they can and will eventually destroy your aquarium.
