Saltwater trout, croakers and drum are among the best known fish of North America's Atlantic Coast. A characteristic of this family of fish is the ability to produce croaking or drumming sounds with the air bladder, which is why common names of members of this family of fish include croaker and drum.
Spotted Sea Trout
Spotted sea trout, also known as speckled trout are common throughout the Southeast. The fish are known for their beautiful pattern of black spots on an olive-green or gray back, silver-blue sides and a white belly. Spotted sea trout range from 12 -32 inches in length and weigh up to 10 pounds. Spotted seatrout are the most sought after fish by recreational anglers in the USA. They are popular along the Atlantic Coast but even more sought after in Gulf Coast saltwater fishing.
Weakfish
Weakfish are also known as gray trout. Their coloration includes a dark olive back, iridescent blue and copper sides and a white belly. Other identifying features are yellow fins, large canine teeth in the upper jaw and dark spots on the upper part of the body, sometimes forming diagonal lines. Adult weakfish typically range from 12 - 36 inches and weigh 18 pounds. The name "weakfish" comes from the fish's fragile mouth, which tears easily when hooked. Weakfish is the state fish of Delaware.
Atlantic Croaker
Atlantic Croaker are a well known member of this family of fish. Croaker have stout bodies marked with a pattern of bars and specks on a silver-gray background. They are common along the Mid-Atlantic Coast although they are known to have wild population fluctuations. The fish get their names because of the "croaking" noise they make when removed from the water.
Spot
Spot are small stout bodied members of the croaker and drum family. They are named for the prominent black spot on their flanks. Spot occur along the Atlantic coast in estuarine and coastal waters from the Gulf of Maine to Florida, although they are most abundant from Chesapeake Bay south to South Carolina. Spot are very popular among recreational anglers and are also harvested commercially in much of their range.
Black Drum
Black drum are among the best known members of the drum and croaker family. Black drum are heavy bodied fish with barbels or whiskers under the chin. Younger fish have four or five dark vertical bars on their sides but the stripes tend to fade with age. The coloration of backs and sides varies although drum usually have a white belly. Black drum sometimes exceed 100 pounds.
Red Drum
Red drum, also known as channel bass, redfish and spot tail bass are another large member of the croaker family, sometimes exceeding 50 lbs. The fish are similar to black drum but are not as deep bodied and have a reddish-copper color. They feed on fish and crustaceans. In 2007, President George W. Bush designated the Red Drum as a protected game fish. The red drum is also the state fish of North Carolina.
