It is an all too common mistake that I have seen many times. Setting the hook too soon.
A good rule of thumb to remember when using any top water fishing bait is to wait until you notice the weight of the fish first and then set the hook. Waiting tells us that the fish is liking what he is tasting and most likely done not want to let it go. If it is taken away too soon, then the fish won't have time to grab it and get out of there. Be patient and wait for the weight! You will be rewarded for your patience in the end.
So how about bait that is used below the surface? Once you notice that your bait is seemingly moving on its own is when I would recommend setting the hook. If it is moving, the fish intends on eating, so set that hook.
Any odd moves coming from my bait usually serves to bolster my confidence when it comes to knowing that fish will be in the live well. When a nibble here and a nibble there is looking like it is the what's going on then it is usually a good idea to set your hook but your guess is as good as mine as whether or not it will take because the indecisiveness could mean the fish is already either full or slow from colder waters. Time will tell if nibbling will pan out. Let the fish feel nothing suspicious in the line and give it plenty of slack for it to explore. After a few seconds have passed where you no longer feel the fish, begin to carefully move the bait with the tip of the fishing rod and remember to set the hook if you suddenly feel the weight of that fish. Movement of the bait will often times provoke a bite especially when its tasting good to them. Because of this, it is a good idea to use scent on cold days. You will be surprised how often it works so keep it with your fishing tackle.
Above all, do not let the little nibbles trick you into thinking the fish on the other end of that line are tiny as reality is they can tend to be rather large and end up bending that rod as if it were puddy and therefore making my entire week. I can't think of a better feeling than that.
