The Fish Aquarium

This is the time of year when Lake Erie walleyes are struck with wanderlust.  For no apparent reason, these fish will pull up stakes, even when the waters are filled with forage, and literally disappear overnight.

  Where did they go and why? It's a puzzle that drives many fishermen crazy. Fortunately for me, I stopped fretting over this phenomena years ago. About the only thing the angler can do is top off the fuel tanks and start looking.

  Back in the 1980's, I and my angling brethern were faced with this same problem. On one particular mid-summer day, I ended up 25 miles from home and within spitting distance of the boundary with Canada. No walleyes to be found!

  Instead of backtracking, I took a different route home, heading southeast where the water was 65 feet deep and somewhat cooler. Bingo! About nine miles north of Avon Point the fishfinder screen lit up with big fish. I got lucky and caught some eyes...16 miles from the dock.

  But this is what fishermen are up against when they want a cooler full of fish and they aren't finding them in the usual spots. I know gasoline costs are way up but it's the only way, unless you are willing to wait while others find the hotspots...and fish them out before telling anyone.

  A way around this problem is to huddle with other boater/fishermen. Plan a strategy that sends each boat in a different direction, maybe 10-15 miles apart. Cover unfamiliar areas. Be on the lookout for surface minnows. Most of the time, predator fish such as the walleye will be suspended under them.

  Walleye movement studies have been done by the Ohio Division of Wildlife and are well documented. Radio transmitters were attached to adult fish so biologists could track them. To their amazement, some fish ended up as much as 20 miles away in one day.

  And some kept coming back to old haunts. This leads me to another point: keep a yearly journal of where fish are caught. Then when the fishing gets tough, refer back to your notes and look for keys that might help put you on the fish again.

  For anglers who rely on charter boats to get on the lake, July fishing should be looked at as an opportunity. Even if the catch rate might be down, you'll most likely get a long day on the water and see some of the captain's favorite fishin' holes.

  Then if you make the transition to boat owner sometime in the future you'll have a better handle on where to find fish. I think the trade-off is well worth it.
